AUGUST
Hot August Nights at the Old Sacramento
Waterfront
Where summer sizzles with art, laughs, late nights, and river
breezes
It’s August, and you can feel it in the air. Warm nights, golden hour lighting up the river, and the cobblestones radiating just enough heat to remind you: this is peak summer in Old Sacramento.
But it’s not just the temps that are hot! The lineup of things to do, see, sip, and shop is absolutely on fire. Whether you’re chasing quirky date nights, gallery vibes, historical haunts, or just a really good excuse to grab a bite at sunset, here’s your guide to making the most of Hot August Nights at the Waterfront.
Stay Out Late for Third Thursdays in Old
Sacramento
Thursday, August 21, 4 PM - 8 PM
Think of it as an open invitation to wander. Every third Thursday of each month, the district lights up with merchant workshops, artist demos, live music, and unexpected happenings tucked into shops you thought you knew. Come down and see what surprises await. It’s part art walk, part shopping adventure, part “Whoa, I didn’t know this was here!”
Pro tip: Look for the “Learn From Locals” A-frames. Start on Front Street, explore the historic alleys, and wander your way around the district. Magic hides in every corner.
Gallery Night: “Goodbye, Humans. Hello,
Tulip.”
Friday, August 16, 6 PM - 8 PM at Atrium 916
Don’t let the name fool you, this one’s a celebration of life, color, and climate consciousness. Sacramento artist Hellxia brings a bold visual message about the planet and where we’re heading. Expect wild paintings, good people, good beverages, and a solid chance to say, “Yeah, I went to a gallery opening last night.”
The Past Comes Alive: After Hours Historic
Tours
Fridays & Saturdays, 6 PM – 7:30 PM
When the sun goes down, the ghosts (and gold miners) come out. The Sacramento History Museum is running evening walking tours all month long — and trust us, these aren’t your grandma’s history lessons. These are gritty, funny, sometimes chilling stories told right where they happened. Lanterns included. Goosebumps optional.
Cool Down with Comedy at Laughs Unlimited
August is jam-packed with shows, and Laughs Unlimited is dishing out laughs like cold beer at a riverfront bar. Here’s who’s coming through:
August 1-2: D’Sean Ross
August 6-9: The 45th Anniversary Sac Town Comedy Get Down!
August 15-30: A rotating cast of funny humans, including Michael Turner, Manny Maldonado, and more!
Perfect end to a date night, or show up solo and laugh your whole face off in good company.
Beat the Heat at Underground Mini Golf
Open Daily, 10 AM - 9 PM
When it’s 97 degrees and you’re not trying to fry, duck into the Underground Mini Golf course at 1028 2nd Street. It’s fun, Gold Rush-themed, and delightfully air-conditioned. Bring friends, bring a date, or bring your competitive streak.
Treat Yourself While You Wander
Half the joy of August in Old Sac is just… strolling. Grab an iced drink. Dip into some quirky stores. Peek into artist co-ops. Maybe buy a ridiculous hat or an amazing vintage trinket you absolutely don’t need. That’s the fun of exploring Old Sacramento’s 125+ unique businesses!
Bonus: Some of our shops and adjacent patios stay open later on event nights. Grab a shady spot, order something chilled, and people-watch like it’s a sport.
Plan Your Perfect Hot August Night
Here’s how your dream evening might go:
4:00 PM - Arrive, iced coffee in hand
4:30 PM - Explore a few unique businesses for some
fun, vintage finds
6:00 PM - Swing by the Atrium 916 gallery opening
7:30 PM - 18+ After Hours Tour OR…
8:00 PM - Comedy show at Laughs Unlimited
9:30 PM – Grab a nightcap to share your favorite moments
before enjoying a moonlit river walk
Repeat as desired. No two nights are the same.
Come for the vibes, stay for the stories
So yeah, it’s hot out. But that’s kind of the point. August is when Old Sacramento shows off, and you’ll want to be here for it. After all, where else can you sit riverside, drink in hand, and watch old steam engine trains cruise by as the sun sets behind you?
Bring your friends. Bring your curiosity. And don’t forget your camera! The lighting is insane this time of year.
See you under the string lights!
