Rio City Café is situated in beautiful historic Old Sacramento, overlooking some of the most prominent landmarks in Sacramento. The Sacramento River runs by our spacious outdoor patio, with spectacular views of the historic Tower Bridge and the Ziggurat (pyramid) building.
Rio City Café opened its doors in May of 1994. The building, designed to replicate a steamship warehouse of the late 1800’s, is open, airy, and stylishly rustic. It adds an elegant touch while still maintaining the historic feel of Old Sacramento. We display a comfortably casual setting, with indoor and outdoor seating. We can accommodate large parties and banquets, as well as private parties in our banquet room for special occasions. Or just simply enjoy a cocktail or glass of wine and the view in the outdoor cocktail area. During the colder months, enjoy the view from inside near our cozy fireplace.
The Chef’s approach will be to present fresh, wholesome farm-to-fork ingredients and combine them in a way that is attractive, tasteful and creative. We offer California Cuisine with influences from all over the world.
We offer an extensive well-rounded wine list featuring popular wines from Napa and other appellations of California.
Our best quality is our professional, but friendly and fun staff. Celebrities, athletes and politicians can be occasionally spotted enjoying the food service and atmosphere at Rio City Café

It is almost impossible to have grown up in the San Francisco Bay Area and not have eaten at The Original House of Soul, created by Cattie McCarver in 1968. Long before the legendary restaurant would became a local icon, McCarver spent long days stirring in cast iron pots, and rolling pieces of farm fresh chicken in her secret batter. Times were tough in the early days, while peace loving hippies, protested the Vietnam war and Marvin Gaye was singing; What’s Going On?
..Little did Cattie McCarver know, while her young son Ruben pulled at her apron strings while she worked busily in the kitchen of her restaurant, that 50 years later her same , turkey wings, fried chicken, pork chops and other savory dishes would become her restaurant legacy, led by their head chef, Ruben Parker.
Heritage is something we truly pride ourselves in and is reflected throughout our restaurant delighting all of your senses.
From the second you step in the front door, the sounds of Latin America will gently seduce your ears and continue as you relax outdoors with your favorite cocktail enjoying the view. The wonderful flavors and aromas of our cuisine will not disappoint.
